Procrastination, A thief of Time! And the reason for Stress and Anxiety. Every single day you procrastinate, you add an extra day of your worry about that task, so why not complete the task and move ahead with your life. It is easier said than done, right?
So I thought of making a podcast episode for this and found a perfect productivity enhancement and life coach. In episode 10 of Season 5, Pooja Maheshwari came on the show to talk about Procrastination, and explained wonderfully the ways How to reduce Procrastination?
In this article, we will cover 3 scenarios which is the cause of Procrastination:
- Not believing in Ourselves:
When we do not believe in something we tend to procrastinate it, for example, try to remember a day when it was your first day at the office or the first time you gave a speech or anything that was out of your comfort zone, in the very beginning you must have thougth of running away! right?
But slowly and steadily, you got comfortable with it, you started gaining confidence, and you started believing in it.
Now just assume, how much easy and quick it will be when you start believing in yourself right from the start. The moment you believe in yourself, you start gaining confidence, but for that, you will have to start. Pooja Maheshwari, in this episode, said this wonderful quote, which you might have heard but fits perfectly over here i.e., "One is better than None". The key over here is to start.
- Perfectionism:
This is the most common cause of Procrastination. And sometimes we may use it as an excuse. But one thing which we have to understand is Being Perfect is a Myth. No one in this world is Perfect. I have seen so many big personalities in their best performances, but their next performance becomes better than the previous best! That is, because, even they believe that they are not perfect and they are constantly learning. So if you are waiting to get perfect before a start, you are unlikely to start anything.
- Not Understanding the Importance of the Task:
We all have some tasks, which we keep for later. We think that it is not important at the early stage, but it is important at a later stage. But what we forget is that the sooner that task is done, the sooner we can reap its benefit. For Example: let us assume that you have a business that is going well, and now you want to take your business to a higher level using an E-Commerce medium. During this time, we think that the business is going well and we can deal with the E-Commerce medium later, even when we get the free time, we still postpone the task of E-Commerce work, i.e., because we don't feel the importance of that task, the sooner the E-Commerce medium will be ready the sooner business will grow.
For this, Pooja Maheshwari gave wonderful advice, whenever you see that task on your to-do list of yours, repeat this sentence, "THIS TASK IS IMPORTANT FOR MY GROWTH".
With all these points I do feel that you will have an upper hand on Procrastination, and soon you will be working on the things which are important to you.
So, whatever you feel is important for you, just make sure to start and if you have anything to share with me or you need any help of mine, I am always available for you.
