Eight months ago on the Personality Development Podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with Annie Margarita Yang, an accomplished author of Amazon bestsellers "5 Day Job Search" and "1001 Ways to Save Money." Annie is also a popular YouTube host with millions of views. During our conversation, she shared her inspiring journey from earning $8 per hour at a pizza place to becoming a coach and celebrated author. Her story has served as a wake-up call for many listeners, inspiring them to step out of their comfort zones and dare to dream.
This episode focused on the powerful theme of mindset and how our thoughts shape our reality. Personally, I learned a lot from Annie's story and am excited to share these insights with you. However, I highly recommend listening to the full 45-minute episode, which you can find at the end of this article.
Now, here are some of the lessons that I have listed from the episode:
1. Everyone has a Quota in Life
Annie received valuable advice from a friend’s parent: "Everyone has a quota of work in their lives; if you work now, you don’t have to work later." Taking this to heart, Annie began searching for better jobs. As she secured more positions, she gradually reduced her hours at the pizza place. At one point, she juggled five jobs and eventually limited her pizza place shifts to weekends, dedicating the rest of her time to higher-paying jobs.
2. Find a Personal Motivator
When Annie decided to take a break from her studies, her counselor told her she would never succeed. Determined to prove people wrong, Annie used this as her personal motivation. This mindset kept her focused and driven, proving that using challenges as motivators can be powerful.
3. Pay Yourself First and Set Your Budget (Two Bank Accounts)
Annie introduced a valuable personal finance strategy: always pay yourself first. This means setting aside 10% of your income in a separate bank account for future savings. Additionally, she suggested having another account specifically for bucket list items. This way, you can save for your future while also setting aside money for things you truly want to do.
4. Ask Yourself If You Need It (After Spending)
To cultivate a savings mindset, Annie recommends asking yourself how much joy each purchase brings you after you've made it. By consistently evaluating your expenses this way, you will better understand your true needs and avoid spending on unnecessary items, fostering a more disciplined approach to saving.
5. Difference Between Courage and Confidence
One lasting lesson from Annie is the distinction between courage and confidence. She emphasized that courage is needed to start any new endeavor, whether it’s a career change or writing a book. As you take those initial steps, your confidence will naturally build, enabling you to pursue your goals more frequently and effectively.
These insights from Annie Margarita Yang in the podcast episode "From Pizza Dough to Financial Wisdom: A Story of a Girl Who Dared to Dream" are truly inspiring.
