I always wondered that developing a new habit would be a daunting task. And, with today's competitive market, how can one find the time to even think about starting to develop a new habit? All of it changed after I met Chad Hufford on the Personality Development Podcast.

In episode number 123 of this podcast, named “Better Mindset for Better Future”, I deep-dived into a conversation with Chad Hufford, who is a Mindset coach, and he shares his financial expertise with people to help them live a happy life and build a happy future. He explained wonderfully how mindset directly relates to habits, and how can one develop a new healthy habit in his/her life. We had a detailed and engaging discussion on this topic and from that, I have shortlisted 3 simple steps that you can follow to develop a new healthy habit in your life.

So here are those 3 simple steps:
  1. Keep it Visible
What you see is what you desire. Have you imagined why brands keep showing you the same advertisements again and again? Because they want to develop a mindset that you need it. Similarly, when you want to develop a new habit, you have to keep it visible or in front of your eyes.

For example, if you want to develop a habit of working out regularly, all I want you to do is just keep your training equipment where you can see them. When I wanted to start gratitude writing, I kept my gratitude book where I keep my phone after I go to sleep. What happened was, in the morning after I woke up instead of checking my phone, I got a gratitude journal in my hand. This is the first step that’s it. Just keep the equipment or anything related to your requirement for developing a new habit in a place where it is visible to you. Once, you have done that, the next step gets more easier.

  2. Keep it Small
Every habit, be it healthy or unhealthy starts with a very small step. For example, if you ask a person who smokes cigarettes, that how much he/she used to smoke when he started it, it would be a very small number. But eventually, it increased.

Similarly, when you want to start a healthy habit, all you need to do is start small or as they say 'take baby steps'. Let’s assume, you want to start the habit of reading every day. Start with one page, or even one paragraph a day. And when you achieve that goal, it gives you immense pleasure. This feeling of achieving such a small thing will motivate you to do it again. A simple sense of achievement has a strong impact on the mindset we carry for ourselves. Once you start with this small step, it's party time in the next step.

  3. Reward
When someone achieves something, he/she gets rewarded. The same thing applies to developing a habit. A reward can be anything, a toffee, a coffee, a movie, a song, or anything that pleases you. And like any game, your level of reward should increase.

For instance, you complete one day of running for 2 minutes, reward yourself with toffee, then increase your level to one week for 5 minutes, and you reward yourself with coffee at your favorite place. When you complete 4 weeks of running for 10 minutes, you reward yourself with a meal at your favorite place, and so on. But remember, don’t be too unrealistic with the goals. You start small and grow gradually. Trust and follow the process and the rest will fall into place.

So yes, these are the 3 simple steps to develop and inculcate new healthy habits in your life. I believe this will help you out, and I hope that you will follow it. However, do remember that these are methods and not pills, so don’t expect quick or overnight results. Follow it regularly and you will notice a change in your life.
