3 Easy Steps you should follow to choose your Career!
As a Podcast Host of my show, Personality Development Podcast, I meet a lot of people, and recently, in my latest season i.e., #thecareerstream, the season based on Career Development. The opening of this season was based on the Topic of “How to Choose Your Career?” with Mark Herschberg, an MIT Professor and a CTO by profession.
In this episode, he explained a lot of things related to Career Choosing, and guiding the parents all over the world that they should allow their children to follow their Career Path.
With that reference, here are 3 steps which everyone should follow for choosing their Career:
- Think broad and narrow it down
Think about which field you want to pursue, it can be Technology, Finance, or designing, and narrow down the scope of them. For example, in the Technology field there are a lot of options to consider, like you can be a System Developer with Programming or you can be a Systems Analyst, or a Design Architect. Make sure to note down all the scopes of the field you want to go in and choose your Career. Basically, think about the components of the job and not the whole field. - Think about WHAT YOU LIKE!
You might have heard a common saying, “Keep your Personal and Professional Life different”. What I believe is your profession should closely relate to what you like in your personal space. It is then that you will love your job more than anything. For example, if you like travelling, and you like to work on technology or you like technology and interacting with people around you. These things are going to help you on what you want to do in your life. For Example, if you like travelling and technology you can be a Field Engineer. If you like working on spreadsheets and you like travelling you can be an Auditor. If you like Technology and working on spreadsheets you can be an Analyst. In this way, you are going to end up doing what you love. - Talk to a lot of People:
I gave a few examples in the last step, and also told you to think about the components of the job. But it becomes difficult to understand what all the jobs do. What are things which the Field Engineer does? or What are the responsibilities of a Systems Analyst? For that you will have to talk to a lot of people about their jobs. Ask them what they do on a day-to-day basis to complete their tasks and see if that is something which suits you as a profession.
There can be a situation where you don't have access to a lot of people. In that case, you can always listen to my podcast and other podcasts to gain more knowledge about the people. You can also use your Social Networking profiles to search people and talk to them. Use your network and ask them if they know someone. It is not always about the people you know, it is sometimes the people you know, know someone else you can talk to you about their jobs. Also there is Clubhouse nowadays where you can get connected easily with other people and ask them certain questions.
To conclude this, it is really important to know what you want to do and what you want to get into, and for that you have to plan beforehand on how to take things forward. It is like we make a plan for a trip. Except, over here we are planning a Trip to Success.
